Crematorium and Cremation Plots
Albany Rural has operated its own crematory for decades, serving its own needs, as well as the needs of other funeral homes, cemeteries and individuals. At present the crematory is adjacent to the Chapel, which can be scheduled for funeral and memorial services. Albany Rural Cemetery is in the planning stages of designing and constructing a new crematory which will be located near the main Cemetery gate, east of the office. We are also exploring other possible areas of the Cemetery for cremains gardens or columbarium burials.
If you are interested in other cremation options please contact the office to discuss your interests/needs.

Cremated remains can be returned to next-of-kin or interred at Albany Rural in a specific area called Linden Grove Cremation Garden—an area in ARC designated for cremated remains. Linden Grove is located near the South Gate on Linden Avenue. Linden Grove Cremation Garden blends in with nature and provides a quiet flowered setting among the trees and shrubs. Ashes are interred in small plots beneath granite stones. Families may engrave these stones with the name of the deceased and other desired information.

The New York State Division of Cemeteries recently approved Albany Rural Cemetery's application to construct a modern crematory facility. This cutting-edge facility is set to offer essential services to families in times of loss, all while upholding environmental responsibility and reverence. Cremation plays a significant role in the Cemetery's services and financial stability.
With our current retorts reaching 43 years of service, operating six days a week, and nearing the end of their lifespan, the demand for cremations - constituting nearly half of New York's deaths in 2020 - underscores the necessity of this new facility. Not only does cremation contribute substantially to ARC's annual income, but it also plays a crucial role in covering operational costs.
During the peak of the pandemic, ARC stepped up to aid 92 grieving families from downstate overwhelmed by the surge in deaths, highlighting the vital role cremation services play in times of crisis.

This state-of-the-art crematory catapults ARC into a leadership position within the evolving market, enhancing energy efficiency, meeting regulatory standards, and better serving families, funeral directors, and the broader community. The facility will boast amenities like a temperature-controlled room for remains and a private entrance for funeral directors, ensuring dignified and seamless service 24 hours a day.
Situated opposite the Cemetery's Main Office, the design of the new crematory pays homage to the area's history, mirroring the architectural style of a former train station. This strategic development aligns with our commitment to serving the community and local funeral homes efficiently and compassionately.
