Historic Maps

Maps provide a very important and unique perspective on the history and evolution of Albany Rural Cemetery. These maps tell an interesting story about the many additions and changes that have taken place in Albany Rural over the past 175 plus years.

The following historical maps can be downloaded as .PDF documents:

Notes:

  • One interesting map not available as a .PDF is the original layout design for Albany Rural Cemetery that was completed by Major David Bates Douglass, the original designer of ARC. This large watercolor map can be viewed in the New York State Library Archives.
  • The 1912 Map is the only large-scale map showing the lot numbers within Sections. Since this map was done in 1912 it does not show the newer Sections or lots created in ARC since 1912. For lot locations, you must go into the Cemetery Office and request a specific Section number.
  • The ARC GIS Map with the overlay of the 1912 map shows the present day satellite view of the cemetery with the 1912 map overlaid on it. Since the 1912 map was drawn with more crude surveying instruments, there are some mis-matches between the 1912 map and actual roadways.
